Exiled Russian opposition politician Ilya Yashin says authorities raided his parents’ home in Moscow
Russian police raided the home of exiled opposition figure Ilya Yashin’s parents in Moscow on Thursday, Yashin reported on Telegram.
According to the politician, the search was linked to a criminal case authorities launched against him on in December 2024 for failing to fulfill “foreign agent” requirements.
After the search, my mom and dad were interrogated in the investigations department. The investigators wanted to know if they were in contact with me and where I’m currently located. As if the authorities don’t know perfectly well where they themselves exiled me… But of course, my parents invoked Article 51 [protection from self-incrimination] and refused to answer. This is all unpleasant but entirely predictable.
Ilya Yashin was traded as part of the historic prisoner swap between Russia and Western countries on August 1, 2024. He had previously been sentenced to 8.5 years in prison for criticizing Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.
