In speech to Congress, Trump says he’s received ‘strong signals’ that Russia is ready for peace
In a speech to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump said he’s “working tirelessly” to end the war between Russia and Ukraine. “Millions of Ukrainians and Russians have been needlessly killed or wounded in this horrific and brutal conflict, with no end in sight,” he said.
The United States has sent hundreds of billions of dollars to support Ukraine’s defense. With no security, with no anything. Do you want to keep it going for another five years?
Touting past U.S. support for Ukraine, Trump read what he described as a “letter” from President Volodymyr Zelensky saying that Kyiv is ready to take part in peace talks and sign a minerals deal with the United States. “I appreciate that he sent this letter,” Trump said.
“We’ve had serious discussions with Russia and have received strong signals that they are ready for peace. Wouldn’t that be beautiful?” Trump added. “If you want to end wars, you have to talk to both sides.”
Trump made no mention of his reported decision to pause all military aid to Ukraine, which came after an argument with Zelensky in the Oval Office on Friday.
